ROCHESTER, N.Y., May 21, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Eastman Kodak Company today announced that it has received notice of the Administrative Law Judge’s (ALJ) initial determination in the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) action brought by Kodak against Apple Inc. and Research In Motion Limited (RIM). The ALJ concluded that the Apple iPhone 3G and the accused RIM BlackBerry devices infringe Kodak’s patent, although his recommendation is that the patent claim is invalid.

The patent at issue (US Patent No. 6,292,218) relates to a technology invented by Kodak for previewing images on a digital camera-enabled device that is fundamental to how those devices take pictures. In the face of two separate challenges, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office analyzed this particular Kodak patent and confirmed its validity in December 2010. The final decision of the ITC, based on the deliberation of the full Commission, is expected by September 21, 2012.

“We are pleased the ALJ has concluded that Kodak’s patent is infringed by Apple and RIM. We expect to appeal to the full Commission his recommendation on validity. The ALJ’s recommendation represents a preliminary step in a process that we are confident will conclude in Kodak’s favor,” said Timothy Lynch, Kodak Vice President and Chief Intellectual Property Officer. “In a previous ITC investigation, a different ALJ found this same Kodak patent to be valid and infringed by Samsung, whose products are similar to those offered by Apple and RIM. Kodak has invested billions of dollars to develop its pioneering digital imaging technology, and we intend to protect these valuable assets.”

The ’218 patent at issue in this case is one of 1,100 digital imaging patents in Kodak’s industry-leading patent portfolio. Kodak licenses its technology to numerous leading technology companies, including LG, Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung.

RIM and Ingram Micro has reached a deal that will help to make the BlackBerry PlayBook a more common name in the UK. RIM has reached an agreement that will allow for Ingram Micro to distribute BlackBerry PlayBooks to re-sellers throughout the UK. Hopefully this will help RIM gain a little more market share in an ecosystem that is dominated by iOS and Android.

“Our agreement with Ingram Micro will allow us to broaden and enhance our distribution of the BlackBerry PlayBook. We are leveraging our strengths in communications, social integration and productivity with their strengths in unified communications, software solutions and overall channel reach,” said Stephen Bates, managing director, UK, Research In Motion.

For those of you that do not know Ingram Micro is no small potato. Ingram has local sales offices in 26 countries, has over 105 distribution centers worldwide, represents over 1,300 vendors, and is the only global broad-based IT distributor in Asia. With that type of power behind it, the PlayBook will hopefully gain some more exposure.

“Ingram Micro is once again providing a solid, expansive offering to meet the needs of resellers,” commented Matt Sanderson, managing director at Ingram Micro. “Our continued growth in the telecommunications segment and the ongoing convergence of software and mobile technologies, enhanced with the inclusion of Microsoft Office capabilities on BlackBerry smartphones and the addition of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to our product portfolio, is driving BlackBerry as a strong platform for mobile users of Microsoft Office 365.”

The gang over at N4BB have spotted a new app that is awaiting approval from RIM to get into AppWorld. The app is called DesktopBridge from developer Xitij Ritesh Patel, and it will basically allow to access any Bridge apps from your PlayBook from within a browser window on your desktop. The app uses a SSL connection with your PlayBook and will wirelessly allow you to access your Bridge apps.

As stated the app is still awaiting approval from RIM, but if and when it does get the ok it will be available in AppWorld for $4.99. I can’t see why RIM wouldn’t allow this app in, but stranger things have happened. So keep your eyes glued to Nerdberry as we will bring you updates as we get them.

When Alec Saunders first made a statement regarding how RIM was going to do to curb piracy on the PlayBook everyone assumed that RIM was going to eliminate side-loading of apps. Saunders was in fact not referring to side-loading, but rather the efforts that have been baked into the PlayBook OS 2.0.1 update to help deter piracy.

Here is how the security features were detailed and explained on the Inside BlackBerry DevBlog site;

Backup Files Tied to a BlackBerry ID

Backup files created using BlackBerry® Desktop Manager are now tied to a BlackBerry® ID account. This prevents users from sharing backup files between devices, but still allows them to switch devices. If a user needs to move to a different BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet, they can restore their backup files to the new device after configuring their new device with their BlackBerry ID.

Backup Files are Encrypted

Starting in BlackBerry Tablet OS 2.0.1, backup files are now encrypted. This not only helps to protect a user’s data, but also your applications. The key for the backup file is also tied to a user’s BlackBerry ID account, meaning each user has a different encryption key for their backup file.

How Developers Can Protect Their Applications

You might be thinking that this is all well and good for the future, but won’t the people who pirate applications just leave their BlackBerry PlayBook tablet at version 2.0.0, which doesn’t encrypt backup files? This is a possibility, but one you can help to mitigate. History has shown us that approximately 90% of BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users upgrade their device within a month of an upgrade being released. This means that in a month from now, most of your target audience will be running version 2.0.1.

And so, the BlackBerry App World™ Vendor Portal comes to the rescue! In a month from now (or when you release the next update to your application), you can set the minimum OS version required by your product to version 2.0.1, preventing it from being downloaded on a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet running a lower version. This will help thwart those individuals who may want to try to extract your application files from a backup made using a lower version, because they won’t see it listed in the BlackBerry App World storefront catalogue on their device, therefore they won’t be able to install it.

How to Use Backup & Restore

If you are looking for instructions on how to backup or restore your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, have a look at How to Back Up and Restore a BlackBerry PlayBook on the Inside BlackBerry Help Blog.

Today RI has released three new BlackBerry commercials in the UK that highlight what they feel are the best-selling features of the BlackBerry 7 devices. The basic premise behind all of the commercials are that ”There are people who don’t, and people who do”. This theme was previously seen in some advertising that came out a few weeks ago in the UK, and it looks like RIM has decided that it is working.

The first commercial is showing off BBM Music on a Curve 9320, which is now available on all carriers in the UK. The second ad is showcasing NFC on a Bold 9790, and then the third and final ad is all about the browser on the Bold 9900. Now I don’t mean to nitpick, but is showing off NFC mobile payments really a good choice? While NFC isn’t new and mobile payments have been around for a little while now too, it hasn’t hit mainstream and there seems to still be a year or two before we really see that happen.

Either way it is good to see that RIM is not taking a back seat and that they are releasing new commercials to help garner some more support for the platform in anticipation of BlackBerry 10 coming out later this year. Check out all three videos and let us know what you think!

The concept of charging on the go has always been either a car charger or having to carry around wall adaptors for me. The ability to easily charge devices while on the go is something that has plagued me for a while now, and most solutions seem promising but in the end they aren’t what I really need. When I saw a Powerbag for the first time I realized that my ideal solution was right in front of me and that I needed to get one ASAP. So of course we reached out to the folks over at MyPowerbag and got a Powerbag Backpack with a 3,000mAh battery to take a look at the bag that is taking the tech world by storm.

I am pretty much always walking around with my laptop bag, as I rarely leave the house without my MacBook Pro and a plethora of assorted gadgets, so as a result of this I always have my laptop bag on me. The thought of being able to plug my phone into my bag to charge it just makes sense and I have to wonder why someone didn’t create this product years ago.

The Powerbag Backpack contains an assortment of USB chargers as well as the obligatory proprietary iPhone connector that almost every charging solution has. The bag is powered by a 3,000mAh battery that will have no problem providing at least one full charge for two average smartphones. Now you may think that a bag that provides such an essential and needed service would lack some of the finer design points, but that is hardly the case. Let’s take a detailed look at the bag itself.

The Bag:

When you first open the bag you will notice that there are quite a few compartments. This makes it very easy to keep everything you need to take with you organized and neat. I am especially a fan of the discreet padded laptop pocket located on the back of the bag. Th smaller front section has all the pockets that you will need to hold pens, business cards, cameras, etc. as well as a nice padded tablet pocket that will ensure that your PlayBook is kept safe during travels.

The second section is the large main pocket that gives you plenty of space to store any larger items such as a coat, binders and books, or whatever else you may need to carry around with you during the day. For me personally I was able to keep all the paperwork that I need on a daily basis kept organized and neat.

The two padded straps on the bag made it very comfortable and easy to lug around all of my day-to-day items without feeling like I was hauling a huge amount of things. I even took the bag on a small hike around some local areas and my shoulders and pack where no worse for wear at the end of the day. The addition of the chest strap definitely helped to keep the load well situated and evenly distributed across my shoulders during the hike. The bag also leaves you will no concerns as to whether or not it will succumb to the elements, such as rain, as even the power outlet to re-charge the battery in the bag is well protected and waterproof. Now that we have taken a look at the bag itself, let’s dive into the real star of the show… the battery and charging abilities that are built-in.

The Power:

If you were to quickly glimpse at the Powerbag would have no idea that it contains a 3,000mAh battery and several different power connections built right into it. The fact that it appears like a normal bag is part of the charm of this one. I usually need to carry around either spare batteries or several different charging cables to make sure that all my devices make it through the day. With Powerbag I was finally able to leave all that extra stuff at home and merely pack what I really needed in my bag.

The small side pocket that contains the built-in miniUSB,microUSB and iPhone connectors is well situated as to provide easy access to your devices while they are being charged. I even found it relatively easy to unplug my phone and access it while I was wearing the bag, which of course meant that I did not have to stop whatever I was doing and take off the bag to retrieve my device. This is one of the big perks of this bag.

Once a device is plugged in you merely have to hold the Powerbag button on the front of the bag for a few seconds to activate the battery, as well as get a reading as to how much juice is left in your Powerbag. I found that I got the most questions from people when they noticed the blue indication lights on my bag and of course they wanted to know what made my bag so special. From the people who I talked to about the Powerbag, almost every one of them deemed that it was product that they would find useful. With a few people I even had to plug-in their phone to prove to them that the bag would in fact charge it.

Now I would not recommend that someone rely on the Powerbag as their main source of charging, let’s be honest the bag is good for top ups while on the go to ensure that you can keep your device going for those few extra hours needed. However with a 3,000mAh battery it will indeed charge the average phone up twice from almost 0%, and you can get even more juice with a 6,000mAh or the monster 9,000mAh battery that can be ordered to replace the once that comes with the bag. In theory I suppose you could order a few of them and then use the bag as your main charing source, however you would have to re-charge the bag at some point and a wall outlet is needed for that, so it does defeat the purpose a little.

Conclusion:

Overall I was very impressed with the Powerbag Backpack. Not only did it provide me with a comfrotable and vey usable backpack for everyday use, but it also helped to solve any issues I had with devices running out of battery life before the end of the day. The assorted compartments on the bag made it very easy to keep everything I carry around with me sorted and well-organized without forcing me to change the way I wanted to use the bag. All of the charging connectors worked very well and I have no issues in getting my devices or the bag itself to charge up.

If you are the type of person that carries multiple devices, or is always on the go and not sure when you will see the next wall outlet, I suggest that you give Powerbag a serious look as it is hard to beat the price and functionality that you will get from any of their products. The Powerbag Backpack that I reviewed is only $139.99 and is definitely worth that price tag. For more information on Powerbag and all their products head on over to Powerbag.com and check out all the awesome stuff.

I was browsing through App World on my PlayBook this morning and came across this new application called InstaBook- Instagram client for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Now I am not a huge Instagram fan but I do occasionally use the application on my Galaxy S2 so when I saw this app I thought great now I can use Instagram on my PlayBook. Judging by the description below this application is not really an Instagram Client, number one “registration for Instagram is NOT required”? Huh? Hit the break for more.

Below is the stock description:

InstaBook is an fast and easy way to browse the beautiful photos of Instagram.

Features:

Search People – Find friends, family, or your favorite celebrity on Instagram.

User Profiles – See you or your friends profiles, pictures, followers, people they follow, or even their biographies.

Browser-Mode – View enlarged photos, and read comments on the Instagram WebSite.

Popular – View the popular photos of Instagram liked throughout the community.

Fast, beautiful and fun way to view photos of friends, family, and celebrities on Instagram.

“You DO NOT NEED a Instagram account to use this application”

We think that RIM should not have let this application into App World with its current title “InstaBook – Instagram Client” is should have been something like InstaBook an Instagram Browser…. What do you think let us know in the comments.

If you wan you can check out InstaBook – Instagram Client in App World for $1.99
